about

Buried in the recesses of each of our memories are images of wallflowers at those seventh and eighth grade dances. You know, one who is not wearing too much makeup or too revealing an outfit and considers it best to simply smile at her girlfriends’ comments, rather than giggle or guffaw.

The same could be said for “Friends,” the opening track of this album. In this age of media over-saturation, it’s refreshing to slip a disc into a stereo and not feel forced to be dazzled with glitzy production or self-consciously crafted big choruses, nor enticed with show-offy and/or sexy female vocals. Even when the plaintively sung “Friends” opens up for guitarist Henning Ohlenbusch to lay down a solo, the musician simply eases the listener into a feedback-rub, and we breathe a sigh of release just as singer Lesa Bezo does until the third verse arrives and she resumes her elegantly lovely ode to the simple value of companionship.

“Snow Day” follows, a charming, amiable pop gem that could grace a million play-lists. Our consciousness is now relaxed enough to admire our wallflower for her sweet nature and the only thing better than enjoying time with friends is the chance to play hooky from work with your sweetie, in order to “Curl up by the fireplace and watch a movie, something that we have seen too many times already so we can doze off and dream of days just like the one today.”
By the time the final track on the album fades out with a “la-la-la” chorus, supported by a nylon string guitar and melodica in waltz time, we’re happily enchanted and can slip this disc into the racks of our CD collections knowing that it’ll be there when we want to treat ourselves.

For its part, the spine winks back, with its playful font (fawnt?) nestling into a yellow and green background. These Fawns are bashful creatures but they are beautifully at peace with their surroundings and this musical world, with its gentle hummable melodies, strummy midtempo grooves, and sparkling pop gleam is simply “A Nice Place To Be.”

Track Name: Friends
I have friends I love so dearly
They are constantly near me
In my heart
In my heart
In my heart
In my heart

I hate being left alone
But I like to be alone
In my head
In my head
In my head
In my head

I watch everyone around me
Makes me feel a bit less crazy
In the end
In the end
In the end
In the end
Track Name: Snow Day
It’s cold outside
And I don’t wanna go to work today
So can’t I hide
Beneath the covers sleep the day away
It won’t be long
‘Till the snow has covered up the windows
Of my car
And I don’t feel like diggin’ out again today

So come in here
And we can sleep a little longer baby
I’ll call Curt
And later you can give a call to Nancy
Tell them that
We’re just stuck inside a pile of snow
Sorry but
I just couldn’t get my car to go today

Baby won’t you play hooky with me
We can sit around
Drink peppermint tea
Go outside and build a snowman
Throw a snowball at the mailman
Baby that sounds perfect to me

We’ll come inside
Take our boots and hats and gloves and coats off
Curl up by
The fireplace and watch a movie
Something that
We have seen too many times already
So we can doze off
And dream of days just like the one today

Baby won’t you play hooky with me
We can sit around
Drink peppermint tea
Go outside and build a snowman
Throw some snowballs at the mailman
Baby that sounds perfect to me
Track Name: Would You Stop?
I watch you on the dance floor
You’re touching all the girls
I have to leave the dance floor
When you’re touching all the girls
A sweaty arm rubs up against me
That’s when I have to leave
My fun is spoiled as I retreat
Because you’re such a little sleaze

Would you stop
If you only knew
That the whole
Town was on to you

I hear you talking to her
You said the same thing to me
The last time you had me cornered
To talk about the music scene
You sound just like a cartoon teacher
Every time you ramble on
Especially when the band is playing
One of my all time favorite songs

Would you stop
If you only knew
That the whole
Town was on to you

I see you coming towards me
Out of the corner of my eye
Your face is flashing in the strobe light
There is no place for me to hide
Another girl gets on the dance floor
And you’re not sure which way to glance
So you fall down on the dance floor
In a sea of “boots and pants”

Would you stop
If you only knew
That the whole
Town was on to you
Track Name: Bored
I am bored
I am looking for
Something to
Occupy my time
Is that something you can do?
To help me
Help me figure out
What to do
Help me
Help me figure out
What to do

I could go
To the store
But it wouldn’t really
Matter much
Cause it’s not
Like I’ve got the money
To buy things
Pretty things
That I don’t even need
To buy things
Pretty things that I don’t even need.

I could read
A book
But it would just make me
Fall asleep anyway
Cause that’s what I do
When I’m reading
Sleeping isn’t all that far behind
When I’m reading
Sleeping isn’t all that far behind

I am bored
I am looking for
Something to
Occupy my time
Is that something you can do?
Track Name: Movie Star
Thought I saw you in a
Foreign film
You just walked across the
Movie screen
And I almost screamed
In the theater
And I almost screamed
In the theater

It’s been years since I have
Seen your face
Still I recognize it
Anyway
And I hope that you are
Doing well
And I hope that you are
Doing well
Track Name: I Can't Wait
There’s a method to my madness
If you find it let me know
And I’m feeling all this sadness
I just couldn’t let it go
I can’t wait to see you there
I can’t wait to see you there
It’s always such a nice place to be
With you

There’s a madness to my method
Everything I say is wrong
And I’m feeling so distracted
So I won’t be staying long
I can’t wait to see you there
I can’t wait to see you there
It’s always such a nice place to be
With you

If I could just get over it
If I were comfortable in my skin
I’d walk into the room
And I’d be fine

I was nervous to begin with
But I think that it my pass
Still I’m feeling kind of awkward
So I think I’m gonna leave
I can’t wait to see you there
I can’t wait to see you there
It’s always such a nice place to be
With you

Now I’m standing here beside you
And everything’s ok
Still I’m feeling kind of frail here
I just want to shrink away
I can’t wait to see you there
I can’t wait to see you there
It’s always such a nice place to be
With you

If I could just get over it
If I were comfortable in my skin
I’d walk into the room
And I’d be fine
Track Name: Freaking Out
You’re freaking out in your usual way
I’m standing by and I don’t have any say
Call out to the world
“You know this just isn’t fair!”
Call out to the world
And then pretend not to care

We’re all about to explode into space
We’re all about to have our memories erased
Scream like you are six
Without a care in the world
Scream like you are six
A little boy or a girl
A little boy or a girl

We’re all just standing here
Waiting for the magic to appear
We’re all just standing here
Waiting for some magic to appear
We’re all just standing here…

You’re hiding out in your usual space
I’m trying hard to put a smile on your face
Yell back to the stars
“You see it’s just a bad day!”
Yell back to the stars
And then act like it’s ok

We’re all in charge of this invisible place
We’re all in charge even if it’s a fake
Scream like you are six
Without a care in the world
Scream like you are six
A little boy or a girl
A little boy or a girl

We’re all just standing here
Waiting for the magic to appear
We’re all just standing here
Waiting for some magic to appear
We’re all just standing here
Waiting for the magic to appear
We’re all just standing here…
Standing here…..
Track Name: 3 Days
Well they’re probably waiting to see you
Probably waiting to hear you
Probably waiting to love you from afar
You know you’ve been looking for trouble
You never act all that subtle
Clever, you think you’ve climbed into their minds

3 days and you’re gone
3 days and you’re gone
3 days and you’re gone
From here

The party was thrown in your honor
Everyone’s come together
To toast to the one who made it all work out
You’ve been hiding away for an hour
People are starting to wonder
We’ll make some excuse and show them to the door

3 days and you’re gone
3 days and you’re gone
3 days and you’re gone
From here

The psychic was right when she told you
You’d miss an important phone call
And your whole world came crashing to the ground
So pack up your things and get going
Something you’re always regretting
Is calling you back away from this town

3 days and you’re gone
3 days and you’re gone
3 days and you’re gone
From here
Track Name: Lived Without It
He’s playing a song right now
He’s giving it all he can
she’s wishing that she was there
To see it

She’s watching a tv show
She’s curling up on the couch
He’s wishing that he was there
To see it

And how they thought about it
Talked about it
She’s still alone
And how they lived without it
Dreamed about it
She’s all alone

He’s calling her on the phone
He’s making his way back home
She’s waiting with much anticipation

She’s counting the days go by
She’s hoping today’s the one
He’ll walk through the door and call
Her baby

And how they thought about it
Talked about it
She’s still alone
And how they lived without it
Dreamed about it
She’s all alone

And how they thought about it
Talked about it
She’s still alone
And how they lived without it
Dreamed about it
She’s all alone
Track Name: Any Day
You ought to tell me what your name is
Before we try to talk about this
It’s such a hassle to be honest
When you are trying to be modest

Last night I saw you at the rock show
Your arms were up and you were letting go
Today you’re acting like a Senator
Don’t you remember?
Is it all a blur?

Any day
Any day
Any day
You’re gonna crack

Every day
Every day
Every day
You’re looking back

Your day job leaves you wanting way more
When all your friends are staying out till 4
You’re tucked into a world of dreams
Tossing and turning for the thieves

Just walk away just leave it all behind
The freedom brings with it some piece of mind
And if you’re feeling some uncertainty
Remember all it is you want to see

Any day
Any day
Any day
You’re gonna crack

Every day
Every day
Every day
You’re looking back

La da da da da da da da da……
Track Name: Sixteen
Where you gonna go?
You’re fading fast
Who you gonna tell?
You’ll never last
You were my best friend

The day I had to say
Goodbye to you
The day I turn
My back on you
I left you lying there

Nobody was around
They all could tell
I left my camera there
And it was fine
You are flying now

The car ride home was long
And I was tired
Staring into space
And my heart ached
I was just sixteen

La la la la la la
La la la la………
